Dr. Billhymer has received extensive experience in the polytraumatized patient, fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum, complex periarticular fractures, minimally invasive fracture care, and the correction of complications from these injuries (including bone infections).
Dr. Billhymer joined Abrazo West Valley Hospital in 2014 as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. Having trained with internationally renowned orthopaedic trauma surgeons at some of the busiest trauma centers in New Jersey, New York and Florida, he brings in-depth, broad exposure to orthopaedic trauma care. Trauma became his main area of interest because he found the complex and unique characteristics of each fracture challenging, yet rewarding, to fix. He also found great fulfillment in being able to help facilitate the often dramatic recovery traumatized patients make.

Prior to moving to Arizona, Dr. Billhymer was an Adult and Pediatric Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery Attending at busy Level 1 and Level 2 trauma centers in Illinois.
Dr. Billhymer has served on medical mission trips to Guatemala and Honduras. He has published research and presented research data at scientific meetings.
Dr. Billhymer is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He earned his MD from the Univeristy of New Mexico School of Medicine. He completed residency at Rutgers University in New Jersey and an orthopaedic trauma surgery fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, FL.

Sarah Decker
Physician Assistant
Sarah Decker was born and raised in Arizona where she grew to love the outdoors and life sciences. As she became more involved in academics and athletics, she became fascinated by the human body and its resilience and vulnerability to everyday life. This enthusiasm drove her to pursue a career in the medical field as a physician assistant (PA). After volunteering at a hospital, shadowing an orthopaedic surgeon, and becoming involved in health care clubs, Sarah developed interests in the fields of orthopaedics, traumatology, and surgery. She was finally introduced to the orthopaedic trauma field in the form of a clinical rotation with Jamie Coracides, PA-C. As she trained with Jamie, Sarah began to appreciate how complex the field is and found satisfaction in helping trauma patients recover from their injuries. She knew that she wanted to continue working in such a challenging and innovative field. After graduating, Sarah joined Sonoran Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons as physician assistant to Dr. Michael Billhymer. She has made it her goal to assist him in providing excellent patient care, both in and out of the operating room. Sarah Decker is a certified physician assistant. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Biological Sciences. She earned her Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Midwestern University.
